What Are FFXIV Mounts?

As you would probably expect, the mounts FFXIV offer have similar capabilities to mounts from other games. This means that, with mounts, you can traverse the world faster and get to your destinations much quicker. However, FFXIV mounts aren’t immediately available and you have to contend with some slower traveling before getting your first one. Getting to that milestone and unlocking FFXIV mounts usually takes some time. Most players will unlock their first mount after finishing level 20’s main story quest. On the other hand, you can also fulfill various quests and requirements to unlock different FFXIV mounts. At the time of writing, there are already around 180 FFXIV mounts in existence. However, the key to unlocking each varies in the task, requirements, and difficulty. Hence, you might need to do a little research about how to unlock mounts FFXIV has to offer. If you have something specific in mind, you might need to fulfill different requirements from the last mount you unlocked. Play Final Fantasy XIV on your PS4 today!

20 FFXIV Mounts You Shouldn’t Sleep On

Which FFXIV mounts are the best within the game? Here’s our pick of the top 20 you shouldn’t miss out on.

1. Alte Roite

One of the rarer FFXIV mounts on this list is the Alte Roite mount. If that name rings a bell, then you’ve guessed correctly: Alte Roite is a callback to Final Fantasy V. In that game, Alte Roite is a wizard who turns into a dragon — that dragon being the mount in FFXIV. It has a pretty cool design that moves in circles with retro music playing in the background while you’re mounted. However, it’s pretty rare, as you can only obtain it by completing Deltascape 4.0 Savage.

–  Guaranteed drop from Deltascape 4.0 Savage

–  Rare

2. Archon Throne

Riding on a horse is fairly typical for a medieval fantasy game like FFXIV. That’s why riding on the Archon Throne feels like a breath of fresh air. With it, your character seems more like royalty riding on a giant moving throne. However, it does look a bit more like a chair than a throne, as the name implies.

– Multiple means of acquisition

– Looks more like a chair than a throne

If you’re unfamiliar, the Archon Throne is one of the FFXIV gold saucer mounts you can obtain through multiple ways. The first method is by acquiring it as a reward from the Manderville Gold Saucer. On the other hand, you can also buy the throne for 750,000 MGP from the Gold Saucer Attendant.

3. Astrope

FFXIV two-person mounts feel somewhat rarer than mounts with a one-person capacity. Perhaps that’s what makes the Astrope mount feel so special. It’s one of the best FFXIV mounts you can find, with a design that looks something like a magnificent Pegasus. However, it’s still a horse-based mount, so it’s not ideal if you want something more unconventional. Moreover, it’s one of the hardest FFXIV mounts to obtain, forcing players to grind through months of hard work.

–  Two-person mount

–  More generic horse-based design –  One of the hardest to obtain

4. Battle Tiger

One of the best FFXIV mounts you’ll encounter in the game is the Battle Tiger mount. One look at this beast will immediately intimidate all of your enemies. Moreover, its armored body makes it tough, but it’s also fast enough despite all that weight. However, it does require a bit of work to get the mount, asking for an achievement unlock and dungeon completion.

–  Unique armored tiger design

–  Multiple requirements to obtain

5. Cerberus

FFXIV mounts like Cerberus can truly make players aim high, regardless of how difficult the task ahead is. For most, it’s enough that this three-headed mythological creature looks cool. However, it is also one incredibly large and intimidating mount, able to frighten your opponents easily. Unfortunately, you’ll need to reach the endgame stages to obtain it, as you’ll need to beat Delubrum Reginae in Savage-level.

–  Cool three-headed beast design

–  Requires progressing to endgame stages (Delubrum Reginae in Savage-level difficulty)

6. Cloud Mallow

FFXIV mounts don’t always come in the form of creatures or magical beasts. Sometimes, they come in the form of round magical clouds with pleasing aesthetics, despite how it forces players to sit. However, it’s difficult to obtain, taking tons of time by building up a reputation with the Moogle tribe. Moreover, it also costs 200,000 Gil.

–  Unique design

–  Takes more than a week to obtain

7. Dark Lanner

One of the best bird mounts FFXIV has to offer is certainly the Dark Lanner. It’s one of the FFXIV mounts that are sure to intimidate anyone who sees you riding it. On the other hand, its mesmerizing beauty also makes it alluring, regardless if you’re the one riding it or not. Moreover, there are also multiple ways to obtain it. The first method is by buying the mount for 99 Horde Totems from Bertana in Idyllshire. However, you can also obtain it randomly as a drop by finishing “The Minstrel’s Ballad: Nidhogg’s Rage.”

–  Beautiful dark aesthetic –  Multiple ways to obtain

–  Single-seater only

8. Demi Ozma

FFXIV flying mounts come in all shapes and sizes — and with the Demi Ozma, we mean that quite literally. That’s because this mount is essentially an ever-changing form. Sometimes, it can be a cube, other times it’s a sphere. As a result, this mount can always keep you guessing and intrigues those around it. Moreover, it’s one of the FFXIV mounts that isn’t too difficult to obtain. However, it does require a bit of farming in the Eureka area.

–  Unique and eye-catching

–  Requires farming

9. Firebird

The best FFXIV mounts really make you look, and that’s exactly what the Firebird mount does. Traveling from destination to destination has never been this stylish or impressive to look at. However, it does have a somewhat overwhelming design, depending on your taste. Nonetheless, it’s one of the best FFXIV mounts out there for traversing the land from up above.

–  Beautiful mount with a stand-out design

–  A little over-the-top

10. Flying Chair

Perhaps the developers ran out of ideas for FFXIV mounts to offer players. However, that doesn’t mean ideas that seem more “out there” are completely bad. Despite its silliness, the Flying Chair mount is still a well-designed mount. It provides both comfort and mobility despite the lack of wheels. The design is simple and versatile, allowing you to fit right in with other home decors. If leaving an impression on others is your goal, this mount will do just the trick.

–  Simple and versatile design – Eye-catching

–  Single-seater despite its size – Looks a little silly

11. Kamuy of the Nine Tails

Have you ever wanted to dart through an area looking as badass as a bolt of lightning? Then perhaps you’d like to look at Kamuy of the Nine Tails. It’s one of the best primal mounts FFXIV has to offer. Granted, this beast is based on a regular horse design. However, its embellishments and features make it stand out — especially with the unique lighting. Unfortunately, it takes several steps to acquire, making itself available only after you get every Stormblood Extreme primal mount. Afterward, you’ll have to complete a side quest called “A Lone Wolf No More.”

–  Looks amazing

–  Takes multiple steps to get

12. Kirin

Similar to Kamuy of the Nine Tails, Kirin sports a fiery aesthetic but with a different design. FFXIV pony mounts like these are certainly pretty to look at and will draw attention regardless of where you go. Moreover, it can even fly if you’re running patch 3.1 and later. However, the mount is fairly difficult to obtain and requires you to have all other Nightmare mounts. Afterward, you’ll need to get a quest from an NPC named Wandering Minstrel in Mor Dhona.

–  Fiery, eye-catching aesthetic – Can fly after patch 3.1

–  Requires all other Nightmare mounts

13. Logistics System

One of the best FFXIV PVP mounts is undoubtedly the Logistics System. As its name implies, this mount feels a little more cold and mechanical, with a man-made look and feel. This spherical orb is one of the FFXIV mounts that’s sure to turn some heads. It has a simple and elegant design, yet with steampunk-like vibes to add some flair. However, it’s somewhat time-consuming to obtain. You have to get an achievement called “Behind Enemy Lines” to obtain it.

–  Flying mount – Unique steampunk-esque design

–  Time-consuming to obtain

14. Lunar Kamuy

If fiery FFXIV mounts like Kirin are reminiscent of the sun, Lunar Kamuy is more like the moon. Lunar Kamuy, one of the many FFXIV Kamy mounts within the game, glows with a deep purple light. It gives off a mysterious vibe while remaining large and intimidating. FFXIV dog mounts like the Lunar Kamuy are great for showing off. Moreover, there’s more than one way to acquire it: either through a purchase or as a random reward drop. However, despite its size, this mount comes only with one seat, so don’t expect to ride with a partner.

–  Mysterious aesthetic – Multiple methods to acquire

–  Single-seater only

15. Mikoshi

It’s not every day you get to feel like royalty being served by those of the Namazu tribe. That’s why Mikoshi is one of the most special FFXIV mounts you can find in the game. The mount’s design is reminiscent of eastern palanquins, although instead of riding inside, you ride on its side. It’s certainly one of the best ways to feel important as you ride and traverse the land. However, Mikoshi is pretty difficult to get, requiring a couple of weeks of grinding before you can earn the reputation.

–  Makes you feel like royalty being served

–  Takes a few weeks to earn the reputation required – Grinding for daily quests

16. Nightmare

One of the best FFXIV mounts within the game is certainly the Nightmare mount. Don’t mistake it for all the other Nightmare mounts in the Extreme trials because this one is unique. Why? That’s because this black unicorn was actually an enemy from the original game. Now, it’s one of the rarer FFXIV mounts you can get from Garuda (Extreme), Titan (Extreme), or Ifrit (Extreme). However, this mount is a little difficult to obtain because it’s chance-based and not a guaranteed drop.

–  Original game’s enemy-turned-mount  – Dark and enigmatic – Rarer than other nightmare mounts

–  Chance-based reward

17. Ramuh

FFXIV mounts come in all shapes, sizes, and designs. However, it’s very rare to see a mythical god be on the roster for the best FFXIV mounts. That’s why Ramuh is so cool: you get to ride an actual god without worrying about consequences. What better way to show off to fellow players than to have a god serve you? The only problem is that it’s difficult to get because you need to complete Eden’s Verse: Refulgence (Savage) first. However, it’s a guaranteed drop, so as long as you put in the work, Ramuh is surely yours.

–  Mount a literal god

–  Requires defeating Eden’s Verse: Refulgence (Savage)

18. Sabotender Emperador

A lot of the FFXIV mounts on this list look epic but also look fairly serious at the same time. That’s why the Sabotender Emperador can feel like a breath of fresh air, bringing some whimsical fun to the game. Riding on this fiesta-looking mount already makes you feel special and probably makes others smile, too. Moreover, the music that plays as you mount it is also a nice touch. However, prepare to take lots of time before you can get this mount because it costs 2 million MGP.

–  Whimsical design and vibe – Unique music upon mounting

–  Costs two million MGP

19. Skyslipper

The Skyslipper is a rare four-seater mount abandoned by the Imperial family in the Crystal Tower. It features a unique design that looks both cool and kind of quirky. Skyslipper is certainly one of the rarer and more difficult FFXIV mounts to obtain. However, you certainly won’t regret riding it once you hop on board. To obtain the key, all you need to do is beat Eden’s Gate: Sepulture (Savage).

–  Unique design for an aircraft – Four-seater mount – Rare

–  Difficult to obtain

20. Starlight Bear

The best thing about FFXIV mounts is that they’re not afraid of looking strange or unique. While the Starlight Bear is nothing out of the ordinary per se, it’s certainly unconventional. How often will you come across a bear wearing a Santa outfit in the wild? It’s a concept that’s both cool and funny. However, it does cost $12 from the Mog Station so you’d need to fork over some cash.

–  Riding a bear with a Santa outfit is both cool and funny

–  Costs $12

What Is Final Fantasy All About?

FFXIV mounts are great, but if you don’t know what Final Fantasy is all about, it can feel somewhat pointless. Final Fantasy 14, Final Fantasy online, and many other games might have their differences, but they also have similarities. For one, they’re all mostly about a band of heroes in a land struck with war. The only way to save the land is to battle with and defeat the enemies you come across. It’s a pretty generic good vs evil dynamic, but it’s still fun to play nonetheless.  On the other hand, Final Fantasy games usually have large worlds full of unique places. Like most online RPGs, Final Fantasy provides items, weapons, character skill customization, aesthetic embellishments, and more. Of course, not all Final Fantasy games play the same way. Square Enix has even created a rhythm game within the franchise. However, for the most part, those are the elements you’re going to get with the series.

Other Titles in the Final Fantasy Series

Final Fantasy has an incredibly large library under the series so it can be difficult to summarize all the games. Nonetheless, there are some major titles within the series that might interest you apart from FFXIV. If you’re curious, here’s a quick run-down of all the major titles in the series and what they are.

Final Fantasy

The first Final Fantasy game was released way back in 1987 so, understandably, modern fans would be unfamiliar. However, the game made waves across the gaming industry and became iconic — unsurprising given the number of sequels.  It was one of the first games that ventured into creating a large game world with turn-based strategic gameplay. The game is a classic, although it doesn’t hold up as well today. It doesn’t have customization or enough variety to provide great replayability. Nonetheless, it’s worth a one-time run if you’re a diehard fan of the franchise. However, you might need a mobile emulator to play it now.

Final Fantasy II

The 1988 sequel feels much more reminiscent of the Final Fantasy games we see in the modern-day. Its story focuses on an evil empire that a band of heroes need to take down. How? Through the turn-based combat that was so popular in the first game. Unfortunately, however, Final Fantasy II wasn’t as much of a hit as its predecessor.

Final Fantasy III

It wasn’t until two years after the sequel that the developers released Final Fantasy III. However, even though it was released in 1990 in Japan, the game didn’t hit the US until much later. In this game, the developers introduced more mechanics, such as summons and jobs. By this time, the game seemed to be solidifying its identity a bit more.

Final Fantasy IV

Many Final Fantasy fans call the fourth installment the “first” game because of its iconic gameplay mechanics. In fact, the Active Time Battle (ATB) introduced in FFIV stuck around until FFX. Moreover, the game also provided more weight to the classes, giving them more individuality and character.

Final Fantasy V

There are tons of games within the series so it’s understandable that some wouldn’t be as popular as others. FFV was that game, despite how it improved on many gameplay mechanics. Unfortunately, Square Enix invested too much into the plot and characters that it became too complex to easily comprehend.

Final Fantasy VI

Despite its age, FFVI holds such a dear place in many Final Fantasy fans’ hearts. The game changed a bit and adopted a steampunk-like world instead of the usual medieval setting in past games. Moreover, the game also had a great story and better gameplay mechanics overall. It’s hard not to love if you were alive playing games back in 1994.

Final Fantasy VII

FFVII marked the start of the franchise’s PlayStation era and it certainly made a grand entrance. It’s one of the games where the graphics upgraded to something more 3D (although it’s admittedly not the prettiest game). Moreover, the game also had a very compelling story and a beloved cast.

Final Fantasy VIII

FFVIII felt a little different from the other games because of the stark differences in the gameplay. It made summoning a lot more prominent and even tweaked the way you could cast spells. However, these changes don’t make the game any less fun as it proved to be very enjoyable overall. Moreover, the graphics improved tremendously compared to the ugly 3D modeling that came out in FFVII.

Final Fantasy IX

In Final Fantasy IX, we see the game making yet another shift back toward the medieval ages. Thankfully, Square Enix executed the change wonderfully and combined it with the well-crafted storytelling that later games had adopted. The game was both nostalgic and felt completely fresh at the time.

Final Fantasy X

The PlayStation 2 made splashes across the gaming industry with more powerful graphics that provided more leeway for game developers. That’s probably why FFX was such an upgrade aesthetics-wise. Moreover, the combat system also had an upgrade, trading the ATB system for a turn-based mechanic. It was also the first to introduce voice acting in the cut scenes which made it all the more immersive.

Final Fantasy XI

We’re all familiar with MMOs by now, but for Final Fantasy, it was FFXI that first adopted the mechanic. However, this change didn’t do much to make the game stand out and it was eventually more average than phenomenal. You can still play it on the PC even today if you want to take a look.

Final Fantasy XII

One of the biggest shifts in the series certainly came with FFXII because of how it dropped turn-based gameplay. Instead, the game favored real-time combat — which was wonderfully executed, by the way. However, some might not even get to the good parts because of the game’s slow start.

Final Fantasy XIII

Everyone was expectantly waiting for the PlayStation 3 when it first came out. Likewise, the first game on the platform was eagerly awaited with high expectations. That game was FFXIII, but unfortunately, it wasn’t as big of a smash as it could’ve been. It wasn’t a bad game, but it certainly lacked the punch the previous games had.

Final Fantasy XV

FFXV is the most recent title and it was a bold but risky entry to the franchise. That’s because the game deviated from its roots, favoring a more western-style RPG — dividing fans. Nonetheless, the game does have its good moments with intriguing gameplay thanks to new missions and skills.

Final Word

The best part about FFXIV is that it has tons of mounts that can set you apart. Whether you ride a glowing steed or hop on top of a glowing orb, you’re sure to stand out. It’s one of the best and most rewarding parts of the game and truly makes you feel unique.
